Working From Home During A Crisis

April 13, 2020 Jennifer Rivera LCSW
Working at home during a crisis

Many of us have quickly had to shift to working at home. Working at home in this way comes with an incredible set of challenges! If you always wanted to work from home know that this is not what working from home typically looks like.

We are all in survival mode during a critical time and we are working at home out of necessity. We are all doing the best we can to work the best we can while many of us are also trying to guide our children with distance style learning. Be kind. Be patient. Know that we are all in this together!

  1. Wake up and get dressed!

In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #3 Dressing To Accomplish Your Goals I chat about the importance of getting showered and dressed to make yourself ready for anything. Many people are barely showering and not dressing. You still need to take care of yourself and prepare for your day.

  2. Create a schedule

It is important to try to keep a schedule. From scheduling set hours to working and setting set times for self care. In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #47 Setting Professional Boundaries I share a number of ideas on how to set boundaries between work and home.

  3. Be flexible

These are unprecedented times and we are unsure of how to perform our essential work without the tools and resources that we need. Be flexible and be willing to learn new things. This is a time to get creative!

  4. Encourage yourself

In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #46 Ten tips to get through a hard time I talk about being patient with yourself, the importance of self care, and reminding yourself that you have been through hard times before.

  5. Stay connected

In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode # 41: How Reset When You Are Having A Hard Time I share the importance of staying connected and building your tribe. We all need to have people that we can turn to and that we can count on. We need to surround ourselves with people that we can learn from and grow with. Find your people and do whatever you can to keep your relationships thriving. Use technology like facetime, zoom, skype or regular old phone calls to stay connected to friends, family and colleagues.
